How creativity can inspire green solutions

Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak once encouraged people to focus on non-artistic endeavours, suggesting that finance and business were more important than say art or ballet. We disagree!

Art and creativity is what literally fosters new ideas. Artists and photographers can sometimes say more in a single painting or shot, than 10,000 words. And so being a creative blogger is super-important!

You don’t want a site that offers reams and reams of boring how-to or why-to information. Instead, inspire people through the right side of the brain. Offer up a pretty image or a poem or a personal story. This is how we change the world!

Here’s an example:

Say you want to encourage people to use VOC-free house paint. Pick which of the following ways you are going to inspire someone about to decorate their lounge, but not really interested in eco-friendly paints. They just happened to find your post:

  • You write 1000 words on why normal house paint is evil. It’s full of VOC (volatile organic compounds), it off-gases for years to cause harm. And it contains fossil fuels from the big oil industry, which is creating climate change and wars.
  • You write 1000 words on all the positive aspects instead. You go into depth on what VOCs are, why VOC-free paints are better. And then give a detailed biography of each of the better brands, and why people should buy them.
  • You have recently given your own lounge a makeover. You use the recommended VOC-free paint in various shades, with accent walls. You then rearrange furniture and then take before-after images to showcase the stunning results.

Which post of the above do you think is going to inspire someone reading your blog to order the eco-version of the house paint?

You have your answer!

People on the whole don’t like being ‘told what to do’, even if it’s the correct information. Lift people up and inspire, rather than give finger-wagging lectures!
