Good Tuesday recycled notebook
When you start your little green website or blog, it’s a really good idea to take time on what to name it. Just like a child or pet, it’s going to be around a long time. So get it right first time. If you change it later on, you could lose a lot of search engine traffic, and will also have to pay to change your logos and literature and domain name.
Try to make your blog name descriptive
It’s not always possible. But try to make it clear what your site is about. For instance if you ran a vegan bakery in a town called Whispers, calling your blog Whispers Vegan Bakery would be perfect! People would know where you were, what you did and that you were vegan.
Likewise, if you offer organic beauty services in Greenery village, calling your blog Greenery Organic Beauty again is good.
Don’t try to get too clever with blog names. People will be searching for what you offer. So think of that, then go with it.
Make your blog name easy to spell
Avoid too many words (three is the limit). And never use hyphens if you can help it. Sometimes your blog name may already be taken (sometimes also unethical companies buy up names that you may think of, in order to sell them at high cost to you).
Don’t be doing with that. Just come up with something. Have a rest and go think of something else, then find some new name. Some people use the .co prefix to get around this (often the domain is then available). But it is a bit more expensive (around £50 a year compared to £10 a year for normal domains).
Try to settle on your domain name
Once you have a domain, it’s good to keep it. If you change it later on, it’s more hassle and expense, and you’ll lose all the organic traffic that you’ve built up.
