The importance of self-care for environmental activists

Often environmental activists can be depressed when things get bad. It’s hard to stay positive with all the bad things in the world. So that’s where self-care habits are good.

You don’t need to buy books or write big lists or go on courses to take care of yourself. It’s basically just common sense. And actually it’s more about habits than anything else:

  • Sleep well
  • Drink enough water
  • Eat healthy food
  • Take regular exercise
  • Avoid too much alcohol
  • Avoid people who bring you down
  • Take walks in nature
  • Make time for hobbies

If you keep to some kind of consistent routine, then when it all hits the fan and you get really down about something (a world war, an environmental catastrophe, something horrible you heard on the news) – rather than put your head in your hands and give up – you rest a little, then get back to the drawing board and keep on doing things to help.

This is the way we collectively do good. Don’t watch 24/hour rolling news, or you’ll likely have a breakdown. Check out what’s  going on in the world with proper non-sensational news (Byline Times is good). Then do what you can to make the world a better place.

We can then all collectively do the same. And this is how we change the world. No banners or shouting required!
