As you likely know, climate change (the warming of the planet) is now the most serious issue our planet faces, as without a planet, we have nothing. There is a lot of talk and arguments amongst politicians. But if you go to the scientists, the information is the same (unless they are being sponsored by the oil industry).
According to The Grantham Institute, there are 9 things we can collectively do worldwide to stop climate change.
Instead of listening to vested interests, why don’t we just listen to the climate scientists instead? Life would be a lot simpler, and results would be gained a lot quicker.
Make your voice heard by those in power
At present we are ruled by politicians. But of course it helps to remember that (in most cases), they are only democratic representatives of the people who elect them – us.
So rather than them being ruled by vested interests like corporate lobbyists, make your voice heard. If your politician is elected by you, he or she must listen. And if not, vote that person out to be replaced by someone who does.
Eat less meat and dairy
Not very fashionable in some quarters, but it’s science. Most meat and dairy is factory-farmed which emits huge carbon emissions due to energy and waste. And with our worldwide population, even reducing meat and dairy still is not going to cut the mustard on climate emissions.
Worldwide there is thankfully a huge movement to go plant-based. So join up! By going plant-based (or at least heading in the right direction), this is one of the best ways to use less land and water, and be kinder to animals (and your heart!) too!
Cut back on flying
Flying again creates huge carbon emissions. If you don’t have to fly, take the train or bus. If you have to fly, then fly economy (coach) so there are more people on each plane, and try to take direct routes for shorter flights. Take-off and landing is what uses most emissions.
Leave the car at home
Again, if you can – walk, cycle, bus or train! If not, then at least use the car less and try to move away from a car-centric way of life. Many politicians are trying to have people go in the opposite direction, going completely against the climate science on this issue.
Reduce your energy use and bills
Switching to green energy is often mentioned. But actually the most effective alternative is to reduce your energy. This does not mean ‘turning down the thermostat’ (this could not be good in cold weather).
But instead just changing your lifestyle. Go for country walks in a thick jumper over using endless energy on computer games. Change your lifestyle to a slow and simple one, that respects nature over wasting energy unnecessarily (like leaving appliances on stand-by, or not making use of your freezer).
Respect and protect green spaces
Again this is mostly political. Vote in local politicians who don’t chop down forests, and join local campaigns to save trees and green spaces. All of these not only support native wildlife, but trees give out oxygen and importantly take in carbon dioxide.
Which helps again to prevent carbon emissions. And as a bonus, helps to prevent floods.
Bank and invest your money responsibly
Money makes our world go round (unfortunately). So changing where you bank makes a huge impact on where financial institutions invest their money. Many big banks and investing firms still give money to people who cause deforestation and buy weapons.
Instead, choose green banks that invest in companies and organisations helping to save our planet, rather than destroy it. Not just currenet accounts, but also investing firms and even your pension.
Cut consumption and waste
Most politicians are still using GDP, using economic growth as the way to raise funds. But this usually involves encouraging people to buy stuff they don’t need. Instead, we can teach those in power that there are other ways.
Live a simple sustainable life, and find happiness in places and people, not ‘things’. Buy what you need (and treat yourself and others to the occasional gift). But inspire yourself (and inspire others) to live a life free from consumerism, in order to save our beautiful planet!
